The Shokunin Award is a nonprofit foundation that promotes the concept of business agility and practical application of the ideas of agility and continuous improvement.
Founded in 2011 by Hiroki Ohkubo, the Shokunin Award takes its name from the Japanese word for “artisan,” and its mission is to bring the agile mindset to business practice. We recognize individuals who make a significant contribution to the evolution of the organization and economy. In addition to the award, the Shokunin Award organizes conferences to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Organizational Structure
The Shokunin Award is governed by a Board of Directors composed of representatives from the corporate, academic and non-profit sectors.
The Board of Directors meets monthly to review the Award programs and propose new initiatives.
The Board appoints an Executive Committee composed of senior members from across the organization to oversee the day-to-day operation and activities of the Shokunin Award and manage its volunteer and staff resources.
The Shokunin Award is supported by the generous contributions of its sponsors, including Shokunin Pharmaceuticals, Ltd., Waseda University, and The Sumitomo Foundation.
Philosophy
The Shokunin Award promotes the concept of business agility and practical application of the ideas of agility and continuous improvement.
The Award seeks to celebrate and elevate the next generation of thought leaders who are willing to experiment and push the boundaries of technology and business practice.
The Award recognizes the importance of collaboration across business, the social sector, and academia, and its shortlisted candidates demonstrate their commitment to practice and dissemination of the ideas of agility and continuous improvement through example.
Prizes and Recipients
The Shokunin Award is given annually to one individual who exemplifies the spirit of the organization.
The Shokunin Award and the Executive Committee will also consider and acknowledge the implementation of ideas from Shokunin Pharmaceuticals, Ltd.
The business or academic setting of the recipient is not a determining factor.
