Hours: since 24 hours = 1 day, we can infer that 24 hours has a time serial number of 1, which can be formatted as time to display 24:00 or 12:00 AM or 0:00. Whereas 12 hours or the time 12:00 has a value of 0.50 because it is half of 24 hours or half of a day, and 1 hour is 0.41666' because it's 1/24 of a day.

Seconds: since a second is 1/60 of a minute, which is 1/60 of an hour, which is 1/24 of a day. We can also say one second is 1/86400 of a day or in time serial number form it's 0.0000115740740740741...

You can type in various configurations of a date and Excel will automatically recognise it as a date and upon pressing ENTER it will convert it to a date serial number and apply a date format on the cell.

You can see in the table above that entering numbers that look like dates and are separated by a forward slash or hyphen will be recognised as a date. Even typing in a date with the month name gets converted to a date.

Now that we understand that Excel stores dates and time as serial numbers, you'll see how logical it is to perform math operations on these values. We'll look at some simple examples here and tackle the more complex scenarios later when we look at Date and Time Functions.

The time being added is input as a time serial number. Notice there are no negative times in the table below. Remember we can't display negative times. Instead we need to use the math operator to tell Excel to subtract time. See examples below.

Note: Times that roll over to the next day result in a time-date serial number >= 1. Cell E28 actually contains a time-serial number of 1.08333', but since the cell is formatted to display time formatted as h:mm:ss, only the time portion is visible.

Notice the last result in the table below shows ######, this is because it results in a negative time and Excel can't display that, but notice it can return a negative time serial number. More on how to solve this later.

This is important because if you try to take 14 hours from 12 hours (without a date) you'll get the dreaded ###### display in the cell, because negative dates and times cannot be displayed. We'll cover workarounds for this later, but for now keep in mind that math on dates and time that result in negative date-time serial numbers cannot be formatted as a date.

In the 1904 date system dates are calculated using 1st January 1904 as the starting point. The difference between the two date systems is 1,462 days. This means that the serial number of a date in the 1900 date system is always 1,462 days greater than the serial number of the same date in the 1904 date system. 1,462 days is equal to four years and one day (including one leap day).

- Excel applies date number formats based on your system region settings. For example, my system is set to display dates in dd/mm/yyyy format, but if you're in the U.S. your system is likely to format them as mm/dd/yyyy. Excel will automatically convert the format of date serial numbers to suit your system settings as long as it's one of the default date formats and not a custom number format.

You will have to use our forum to upload your file, I guess you may have the dates as text, not a formatted number. Please read more carefully the differences between a text and a date value. Here is our forum, you can upload a sample file (create a new topic after sign-up)

Amazon EMR is the industry-leading cloud big data platform for data processing, interactive analysis, and machine learning (ML) using open-source frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Hive, and Presto. Amazon EMR pricing is simple and predictable: you pay a per-second rate for every second you use, with a one-minute minimum. A 10-node cluster running for 10 hours costs the same as a 100-node cluster running for one hour. Amazon EMR pricing depends on how you deploy your EMR applications. . You can run them on EMR clusters with Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (Amazon EC2) instances, on AWS Outposts, on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), or with EMR Serverless. You can run Amazon EKS on AWS using either EC2 or AWS Fargate.

With EMR Serverless, you create an application using an open-source framework version and then submit jobs to the application. As part of the job specification, you can provide the minimum and maximum number of concurrent workers, as well as the vCPU, memory, and storage for each worker. EMR automatically adds and removes workers based on what the job requires within your specified limits. The three dimensions of compute, memory, and storage for workers can be independently configured. You can choose from 1 vCPU, 2 vCPU, or 4 vCPU per worker, memory from 2 GB to 30 GB per worker in 1 GB increments, and storage from 20 GB to 200 GB.

Sharing PHI on a need-to-know basis is a critical component to staying compliant. This is essential when communicating both outside and inside your clinic. The following ten (simple) tips will help you stay compliant.

Observational studies have demonstrated that follow-up after hospital discharge is important, but multiple barriers including logistic, financial, transportation, and socioeconomic inequalities exist in our fragmented health care system making this a challenging task for patients13. The simple act of making a follow-up appointment can be extremely difficult for patients. In a survey-based study of ambulatory clinics in multiple US cities, it was found that only 242 of 1065 (23%) telephone calls were able to secure a follow-up appointment within 1 week of an emergency department visit13. The EMR-based appointment order streamlined the scheduling process and significantly reduced the logistical barriers to obtain a scheduled appointment ultimately leading to improved follow-up rates.

The EMR-based order described in this study was implemented in 25,000 patients over a 4-year period with increasing utilization by providers. The rapid and sustained provider adoption suggests that EMR-based scheduling was favored by providers as it was more efficient, user-friendly, and successful at scheduling follow-up appointments when compared with the traditional model where the primary team has to call and request the appointment. This simple and highly effective intervention can be reproduced and implemented in individual health systems. Due to the promising results of the intervention within the cardiovascular medicine service lines, the EMR-based order has been adopted across all specialties in the entire Cleveland Clinic Health System. Implementation of EMR-based scheduling orders should be explored in all specialties and hospital settings irrespective of the specific EMR that is utilized17.

Since Jencks et al. published their landmark study showing that 19.6% of Medicare beneficiaries were readmitted within 30 days, there has been an intense effort to reduce this costly burden including the creation of Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program under the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services8. Because of the observational benefits of follow-up after hospitalization on readmissions, many proposed interventions to improve follow-up have been implemented18. During this same period of time, the adoption of EMR systems among US hospitals has been associated with a slight increase in readmissions19. This study showed that a simple EMR-based appointment order successfully increased follow-up rates, but also led to an increase in readmission rates. The reason for increased readmissions is likely multifactorial and includes earlier recognition of illness at the time of the office visit, the need to manage acute exacerbations (for example, acute on chronic systolic heart failure), and the generally increased connectivity to the health system resulting in more utilization of care. Furthermore, the follow-up visit was shown in the mediation analysis to be an important contributor to readmissions. Often, sound and meaningful interventions that can improve quality of care may not translate to reductions in readmissions rates as this metric does not fully account for a paradoxical yet competing risk of death20. This study highlights the need to reexamine the intense focus on readmissions as a primary metric7,21.

This study demonstrates that EMR-based interventions are associated with increased follow-up rates after hospital discharge. The available EMR infrastructure in nearly all US hospitals is a highly favorable environment for the widespread adoption of this simple strategy. An EMR-based strategy offers the promise and potential to secure follow-up rates after hospital discharge in an effective and efficient manner.
